Learning the new WordPress Blocks

So now I will finally try to learn the new WordPress. For years I have been dodging this Gutenberg Block thing by installing the Classic Editor directly after starting a new project.

The Block Editor was introduced by the end of 2018 and occasionally I gave it a try. Within minutes I was mumbling ‘This is not working’ to myself. All these active elements and stuff loading annoyed me just like Page Builders where not my thing. Maybe it had to do with the use of my favorite theme Weaver Xtreme and plugin’s like Toolset which had their first steps in implementing blocks too.

But now, about four years later, more and more plugin and theme developers are getting on to the bandwagon. And somehow I got the feeling I need to get on there myself. So on this website:

  • I will NOT install the Classic Editor
  • I will use Toolset solely with Blocks
  • I will try other themes, starting with Generate Press Free
  • I will invest time
  • I will hold back my frustration

And:

  • Hopefully overcome my conditioning

Holding back my frustration has proven especially difficult already. Only one day in I invested hours and hours to get around things. First I used Astra Theme and after I switched to Generate Press there still was a link in the side menu to import a starter website package. So I clicked it and then all kinds of stuff got installed. I don’t like WooCommerce either so in the end I deleted the whole site and started over.

2022-07-02 – Not even 2 months later I’m installing Classic Editor Disable Gutenberg and use Toolset with Legacy views. This Blocks thing is so cumbersome. Every time I need to ‘edit as HTML’ or switch to code view.
